3rd meeting of the Portuguese Blue Biobank Consortium

The 3rd Meeting of the Portuguese Blue Biobank Consortium highlighted progress and future plans, driving innovation in marine biodiversity conservation and the blue bioeconomy.

The 3rd meeting of the Portuguese Blue Biobank Consortium was held on January 25th, 2024, at the facilities of the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) in Algés.

This project is coordinated by CIIMAR and its partners include the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere, Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Aveiro, Algarve Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR), NOVA University Lisbon, Instituto Gulbekian Ciência, GreenCoLab, and S2AQUAcoLAB.

At this meeting, the project’s graphic identity was presented, which will enable all communication about the project to be developed from now on, including its objectives and the results achieved, in a wide variety of dimensions and platforms. The progress of the project so far was also discussed, as well as the objectives to be achieved in the coming months.

Over 30 researchers from the different partners of the Consortium attended this meeting, further strengthening relationships with a total focus on achieving all the project’s goals.

The Portuguese Blue Biobank aims to create a digital network of national marine biobanks in order to facilitate sustainable and regulated access to marine biodiversity for scientific and industrial users, promoting its conservation and compliance with the Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) regulations derived from the Nagoya Protocol.

This project is part of the Blue Bioeconomy Pact, as a transversal Work Package (WP9) of the Consortium, funded by the PRR (Recovery and Resilience Plan), the Portuguese Republic, and the European Union.
