Title: Innovative Solutions for the Sustainable Removal and Management of Marine Litter
Marine litter represents a major threat to environmental and human health. It is therefore urgent to develop solutions and promote the adoption of good practices, responsible behavior and choices, which are essential for a sustainable society and future. This is the mission of the MAELSTROM project. Funded by the European Union, the project brings together a consortium of 14 international partners with the aim of implementing innovative solutions at various levels for the sustainable removal and recycling of marine litter in coastal environments. In this context, the MAELSTROM team implemented a Bubble Barrier in the River Ave estuary in Vila do Conde. The implementation of this innovative technology was the result of a collaboration between CIIMAR, Vila do Conde City Council, Docapesca – Portos e Lotas S.A., The Great Bubble Barrier, the University of Malta, the Environmental Monitoring and Interpretation Center from Vila do Conde (CMIA) and was supported by the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) and the Maritime Authority – Vila do Conde Captaincy. The project supports the global efforts being made to solve the problem of marine litter, as promoted by the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
