The NATURE Project closing event is taking place at CIIMAR on November 5.
After 3 years of work on Nature Based Solutions (NBS) to reduce antibiotics, pathogens and antimicrobial resistance in aquatic ecosystems, the international project NATURE, funded by ERA-NET Cofund Aquatic Pollutants, is coming to an end. As a partner in this project, CIIMAR is hosting NATURE’s final event.
The NATURE project
The project NATURE – nature-based solutions to reduce antibiotics, pathogens and antimicrobial resistance in aquatic ecosystems – aimed to evaluate NBS as a management option for water treatment at the scale of a river basin. This project explored a range of NBS, including constructed wetlands, river renaturalization and wetland restoration, covering the continuum from urban pollution sources to the estuarine and coastal zone, promoting good surface water quality.
During this work, the project quantified antibiotics and other emerging contaminants, pathogens and microbial resistance (including antibiotic resistance genes), assessing their reduction in these systems. It also included ecotoxicological and human health assessments, to evaluate the capacity of NBS to reduce the risks associated with these pollutants.
CIIMAR is one of 6 partners in this project that is Coordinated by the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC).
The project Results and Final Event
The main results of this project demonstrate that NBS are a solution for the sustainable and ecological mitigation of aquatic pollutants. These and other conclusions will be presented at the project final event hosted at CIIMAR on Nov 5 between 9h30 and 13h.
This event is free of charge but registration is mandatory through the link.
