Aims of the module
Introduction to different black-and-white techniques and exploration of them. Participants will develop greater familiarity with the materials through continuous sketching exercises, experimenting with the various techniques. This preliminary work, along with the study of reference works from artists in the field, will lead to the acquisition of skills for creating more detailed and refined drawings.

 

Module content
  • Introduction to Scientific Illustration;
  • Introduction to Materials;
  • Introduction to basic black-and-white Scientific Illustration techniques;
  • Study of the morphology of different natural elements, with the reproduction of their shapes, volumes, and textures.

 

Required materials:

Graphite pencils (various between the H and B range), ink pens (e.g., GraphIT, Pigma Micron…), powder (graphite or black eyeshadow), blending stumps, white eraser, and kneaded eraser, different types of paper. Optional: Scratchboard and blades, India ink, and brushes.

 


Instructor

Helena Baptista – I’m a tax consultant for tech innovation, but my passion is scientific illustration, blending art and science to depict nature’s wonders. With a background in Biology, I create scientifically accurate illustrations using stippling, colored pencils, and sumi ink. Influenced by Ernst Haeckel and Da Vinci, I prioritize detail and research, ensuring each piece reflects true anatomy and behavior.
