The event took place on March 12th and 13th, in Tokyo.
CIIMAR participated in the 12th World Ocean Summit & Expo, organized by Economist Impact and hosted by the Nippon Foundation. This event brings together scientists, policymakers, industry leaders, and stakeholders to address Ocean sustainability.
A CIIMAR delegation, composed of Eunice Ferreira, Joana Xavier, Maria Lígia Sousa, and Susana Moreira, is showcasing the institute’s research, with a focus on the BlueBio4Future and TwinDEEPS projects that aim to advance marine biotechnology, deep-sea exploration, and sustainable ocean resource management.
CIIMAR’s exhibition booth at the summit serves as a platform to foster connections between science, policy, and industry, reinforcing its role in Ocean conservation and responsible resource use.
As part of the event, Joana Xavier, Principal Researcher at CIIMAR, delivered a talk on “Advancing Deep-Ocean Exploration and Observation Capacity for Sustainable Development”, emphasizing the urgency of expanding scientific knowledge and technological capabilities to safeguard deep-sea ecosystems.
Prior to the summit, the CIIMAR delegation discussed CIIMAR objectives and research outputs in meetings with the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology and the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, cultivating further scientific collaboration.
