Oceanus Seminar Series

CIIMAR’s Oceanus Seminar with John Griffin and Ruby George | Boca da Baleia

Rocky Shores as Living Laboratories: Understanding Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning Across Scales

Understanding how environmental factors shape community structure and drive ecosystem functioning is key to predicting the impacts of environmental change. Rocky shores, with their natural environmental gradients, provide powerful model systems for addressing this challenge. In this seminar, we will present recent research from our group and collaborators. We will discuss several experimental manipulations of topographic heterogeneity, revealing cascading effects on ecosystem multifunctionality and stability. We will also introduce emerging work on macroalgal traits. Additionally, we will present a large-scale resilience study spanning rocky shores from northern Scotland to Portugal, testing how climatic stress affects ecosystem stability. Together, these studies highlight the value of rocky shores for understanding biodiversity and ecosystem function under environmental change.

John Griffin, PhD (Swansea University)

John Griffin is an Associate Professor in Coastal Ecology and Biodiversity at Swansea University in the UK. He is particularly interested in the causes and consequences of biodiversity change and the application of trait-based approaches to macroalgae.

Ruby George (Swansea University)

Ruby George is a PhD student also at Swansea University, where she is investigating Ecological Stability across Scales on Rocky Shores and is leading a large-scale study investigating resilience on NE Atlantic rocky shores.
