Eduardo Rocha is a Full Professor of ICBAS-UPorto and Integrated PhD Member at CIIMAR. Holds the Licenciatura in Aquatic Sciences and PhD and Habilitation in Biomedical Sciences. Attended three years of Medicine. He is PI of the Animal Morphology and Toxicology Team (CIIMAR) and Director of the Histology and Embryology Laboratory (ICBAS). His research covers histophysiology of fish gonads and liver, presence, effects and MOA of some classical and emerging pollutants in fish and cancer cell lines. He mentored/co-mentored over 30 MSc and 12 PhD students and authored/co-authored over 250 international publications, including over 200 articles in indexed journals.

Nutritional strategies for improving fish health and welfare. Immunology. Gut microbiota. Use of nutraceuticals in fish nutrition.

Carlos Vale holds habilitation/aggregation in chemical oceanography; former head of department, head of scientific council and deputy director of IPMA, and vice-president at ICES; presently is supervisor of PhDs and mentor of post-docs at CIIMAR and University of Aveiro. Associated with the Master course “Marine Sciences –Marine Resources (ICBAS). Expertise includes behaviour of contaminants in marine ecosystems, interactions with organisms, and impacts of contaminants in evolving environmental systems. He is co-author of more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and 40 book chapters.

Francisco Taveira Pinto is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, Director of the Hydraulics Water Resources and Environment Division of DEC-FEUP, Member of the board of the Water Resources Institute and President of the Portuguese Water Resources Association. He received his degree in Civil Engineering in 1989, his PhD in 2002 in Civil Engineering – Coastal Engineering and his Aggregation in 2007 all at FEUP. His research interests focus on coastal structures, physical modelling, coastal management, coastal dynamics and sea energy. He is author of more than 70 scientific publications in international journals.

Research and Innovation Strategy and Funding

Susana Moreira is PhD in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Porto in 2005. She coordinates the Science and Innovation Office at CIIMAR. She has more than ten years of experience linked to marine related research and innovation management under regional, national and European funding schemes. She has significant working experience in the development and implementation of activities related with monitoring, dissemination and exploitation of R&D results and public policy support. She also works as liaison officer with different actors (e.g. public authorities, funding agencies, academia and research centres, industry, maritime clusters) and represents CIIMAR in several national and European forums. Lecturer of the course of Integrated Ocean Management of the Marine Sciences – Marine Resources MSc Degree, at Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar, University of Porto, Portugal. She has 20 publications in international peer-reviewed journals

Main research: cyanobacteria secondary metabolites: toxins and molecules with biotechnological applications. Director of the LEGE culture collection comprising more than 2000 strains of cyanobacteria and microalgae. Published 490 papers in Biotechnology and Ecotoxicology. Coordinator of two H2020 projects: RISE and ERA Chair.

Ana Paula Mucha has a Degree in Aquatic Sciences (1993), a MSc in Ecology, Management and Modelling of Aquatic Resources (1997) and a PhD in Aquatic Sciences (2002). She has a research position at CIIMAR, University of Porto, Portugal, being member of the Board of Directors and the Principal Investigator of the ECOBIOTEC Team (Bioremediation and Ecosystems Functioning).

Also, she is an Invited Assistant Professor at the Department of Biology of Faculty of Sciences of University of Porto. She focuses her research on the relation between microorganisms and contaminants, aiming the development of bioremediation technologies for ecosystems recovery and environmental sustainability. She also explores the microbe-plant associations for the development of nature-based solutions for water management, and the microbe-animal interactions to increase environmental sustainability of aquaculture production.

She authored ca. 90 SCI papers including high profile journals in the field of Marine and Environmental Sciences. She has been involved in multiple regional, national and international projects, and presently coordinates CIIMAR participation in the European project “BIOSYSMO – BIOremediation systems exploiting SYnergieS for improved removal of Mixed pOllutants” (GAP-101060211). Also she coordinates the project “Ocean3R – Reduce pressures, restore and regenerate the NW-Portuguese ocean and waters” (NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-000064), and the Research Line 4 (Marine biobanks as tools for marine biotechnology) in the structured program of R&D ATLANTIDA – Platform for the monitoring of the North Atlantic Ocean and tools for the sustainable exploitation of the marine resources” (NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-000040). In addition, she has been involved as supervisor in several national and European Master and PhD programmes, and presently she co-coordinates the FCUP team responsible for the M2ex-European Joint Doctorate “Exploiting metal-microbe applications to expand the circular economy” (European Union; Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement No 861088).

Luísa M.P. Valente (Ph.D.) is a biologist with over 25 years of research experience in fish nutrition and sustainable aquaculture focusing on: Fish robustness; Environmental impact; Muscle growth and flesh quality; Functional feeds; Circular economy, One Health.

Senior scientist and Full Professor at ICBAS, University of Porto. Director of the Animal Science Doctoral programme. Member of the Directive Board of CIIMAR, coordinator of the Biology, Aquaculture and Seafood Quality thematic line. Member of the Directive Board of B2E- Collaborative Laboratory for the Blue Bioeconomy. Member of the European Aquaculture Society (EAS) having served as board member during 4 years.

Rodrigo Ozorio (RO) has more than 20 years of experience in Aquaculture, special emphasis on the fish nutrition. He holds MSc and PhD degrees from Wageningen University and Research Centre (WUR), The Netherlands. RO is the expert in the nutritional dynamics of fish and the economic potential of new aquaculture species based on a set of husbandry and physiological criteria. He participated in 15 national and international projects (overall budget of 2.0 million euros), including four projects as scientific leader dealing with new aquaculture systems and sustainable alternative for intensive marine aquaculture. He supervised 8 PhD theses and 15 MSc theses and he authored over 56 scientific publications.

Luísa Bastos is Principal Researcher at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto. She holds a PhD in Surveying Engineering from the University of Porto. Her research is focused on GNSS based technologies, including the development of low-cost GNSS/MEMS systems, with applications to airborne gravimetry, mobile mapping and coastal and ocean dynamics. She has been involved in the establishment of the RAIA oceanic observatory and is presently interested in the development of multi-sensor marine technologies for sea-level, currents and wave height monitoring.

Helena Peres is a Research Nutritionist for the Center of Marine and Environmental Research (CIMAR), at the University of Porto, Portugal, since 2003, and an Invited Associated Professor at the Sciences Faculty, at the University of Porto. Since 2010, she has been invited to collaborate with the post-graduation course, as an Invited Professor at UNESP- Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, São Paulo State University, AquaNutri, Botucatu, SP, Brazil. Her domain of specialization is fish nutrition, with particular interest to amino acids/protein and energy metabolism; nutritional strategies for reducing environmental impact of aquaculture; nutritional strategies to modulate wellbeing, stress and infection resistance, and Integrated Multi Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA).

Paulo Rosa Santos is Associate Professor with Habilitation of the Department of Civil Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering – University of Porto. His main research field is the application of physical and numerical modelling to the study of offshore, port and coastal related topics. In the last 17 years, he collaborated in more than 45 R&D projects and consultancy studies in those fields. Supervisor/Co-supervisor of 35 finished M.Sc. Dissertations and 9 PhD students (ongoing) in the field of coastal engineering and marine renewable energy. Author of over 150 papers published in peer-reviewed scientific journals and conference proceedings (38 papers in Q1 journals). Chartered Engineer (2004), Senior Member (2013) and Specialist in Hydraulics and Water Resources (2019) by the Portuguese Engineering Council. Member of the Board of the Portuguese Water Resources Association – North Branch. PI, Co-PI or Researcher of 9 R&D projects in the field of ocean renewable energies and coastal engineering in the last 5 years (e.g., Atlantida, WEC4Ports, PORTOS, WECANet, ORACLE, SE@PORTS, HYDRALAB+, OPWEC, I.nano.WEC).
