The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a non-formal education, personal and social development program, available to all young people around the world, which prepares them with life skills to make a difference to themselves, their communities and the world.
It aims to inspire, guide, mentor and support young people in their period of self-development and to recognize the skills acquired during adolescence.
The DofE was founded in 1956 in the UK by the Duke of Edinburgh, German educator Kurt Hahn and explorer Lord John Hunt, under the title “The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award”.
Portugal became the first non-English-speaking European country to adopt the program “The International Award for the Young People – The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award”, in which around six million young people in 120 countries already participate.
