CIIMAR researchers in Israel to share techniques in benthic ecology

They worked at the Israel Oceanographic & Limnological Research Institute with Dr Gil Relov team

Within the context of the H2020 EU Project FutureMARES, researcher Francisco Arenas and PhD students Sofía Hernández and Luís Pereira from the Benthic Ecology Team at CIIMAR were invited to participate in a scientific workshop hosted by Dr. Gil Rilov at the Israel Oceanographic & Limnological Research (IOLR) laboratory in Haifa.

The main purpose of this meeting was to share various protocols and novel techniques developed by our team at CIIMAR. The objective was to estimate the Thermal Tolerance Adaptive Capacity of iconic marine species and benthic communities through a series of standardized experimental designs. These techniques will be implemented across several study sites in Europe.

The results obtained from these experiments aim to improve our current understanding of physiological processes and, consequently, species responses. They will shed light on how present-day communities will be structured after exposure to long-term, gradual, and extreme events projected under Climate Change. Additionally, the research aims to develop more efficient actions to protect the most vulnerable marine areas and ecosystems.
