CIIMAR warns of effects of a record marine heatwave in 2022

Observations carried out around Marseille have highlighted the dramatic effects of marine heatwaves on several species in the Mediterranean.

Last summer, CIIMAR was in the news due to the participation of researcher Jean-Baptiste Ledoux in a study characterizing the recurrent heat waves that cause mass mortalities in the Mediterranean Sea. This study, which was contributed by 30 research teams from across Europe, revealed the drastic effect of marine heat waves on marine biodiversity in the Mediterranean between 2015 and 2019.

Now, new observations carried out around Marseille (France) by Septentrion Environnement and a team of researchers from different laboratories, including CIIMAR, have shown the dramatic impacts of the strong marine heatwave that hit the Mediterranean basin in 2022, persisting almost uninterrupted from August to October.
