Biofouling slows down ships, contributes to greater fuel consumption and causes corrosion of materials, damaging the maritime transport industry. Invasive and pathogenic species are also transported from one continent to another, leading to a reduction in marine biodiversity and public health complications. However, the marine paints that coat the hulls of ships and prevent biofouling, continuously release toxic and persistent substances that are destroying our oceans. In order to ban their use, equally effective and economical alternatives are needed, but without compromising the life of the oceans.
