Global warming is a well-established reality for aquatic ecosystems and, until recently, there has been little systematic effort to synthesize the effects on biodiversity in general. Climate change has caused alterations in the distribution, abundance and diversity of aquatic species globally. On a local scale, conditions become more favorable for some species and less favorable for others, altering the mix of species available in the environment. In this talk, we will discuss the effects of climate change and extreme weather events on the dynamics of an estuarine fish community, with an emphasis on the species that have been positively and negatively affected by these events. The aim is also to present the monitoring program developed by CIIMAR-Aquamuseu do rio Minho for fish in the estuarine zone of the river, which aims to deepen understanding of variations over the years in the fish community, thus contributing to more effective and sustainable management of these ecosystems.

Martina Ilarri is a researcher at CIIMAR dedicated to studies focused on aquatic ecology. Her main research interests focus on the study of changes (in taxonomic and functional diversity) associated with the introduction of invasive species at different ecological levels. In addition, she focuses on understanding the changes in the functioning of aquatic communities associated with the impacts of climate change and extreme weather events.
