Portugal is on the right track to achieving the goal of 85% renewable energy integration into its electrical grid, but there are still gaps to fill and sources to explore. Interestingly, what is perceived as a problem—erosion caused by intense maritime agitation along the Portuguese coast—can also provide an opportunity for a sustainable energy transition. Direct exposure to the Atlantic Ocean makes Portugal a “hot spot” for wave energy, a sector still maturing but with immense potential. This renewable energy source is abundant and untapped, with Portugal hosting several ongoing or planned projects to harness this resource.
However, there are techno-economic, environmental, and legislative challenges to overcome, from energy storage issues to offshore survival. In this talk, we will delve into the concepts behind wave energy, gain a deeper understanding of its context and national relevance, discuss challenges and proposed solutions, and explore potential applications for wave energy, such as “green” hydrogen, offshore aquaculture, or seawater desalination.
