The global population is growing, and projections indicate that it will continue to rise until the end of the century, presenting a global challenge to ensure food, medicine, and energy for all.
This challenge is even more demanding when current approaches are highly polluting or unsustainable, making it urgent to find efficient, green, and environmentally friendly alternatives that safeguard life on our planet. In this context, a group of bacteria that has accompanied the history of Earth for billions of years has the potential to transform many sectors of biotechnology and industry.
In this discussion, we will explore cyanobacteria: what they are, where they can be found, the source of their power that inspires generations of scientists from various disciplines, and how modern tools in bioinformatics, molecular biology, synthetic biology, and bioprocesses can be used to unlock their potential for creating low-cost cellular factories for a variety of products.
