From source to sea: conference on integrated water management

CIIMAR is co-organizing the 2024 edition of the Serralves Park Conference on the Challenges and Opportunities of Integrated Water Management.

The conference “Challenges and Opportunities for Integrated Water Management: from source to sea”, organized in collaboration between CIIMAR and the Serralves Foundation and endorsed by the Decade of the Ocean 2020-2030, is taking place on 24 and 25 October.

At a time of water scarcity and contamination, it is essential to promote everyone’s cooperation. Understanding the relationships between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, recognizing our responsibility for their use and conservation, and understanding the central role of the land-sea continuum are crucial aspects of effective water governance. It is in this context that the conference “Challenges and Opportunities for Integrated Water Management: from source to sea” arises, as part of the “from source to sea” approach, and bringing together Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 6 and 14.

Through the UNESCO Ocean Expert Chair, led by researcher Laura Guimarães, CIIMAR is collaborating in the organization of this two-day conference to be held in the Auditorium of the Museum of Contemporary Art, in Serralves Park, where scientists and professionals of recognized merit and representatives of various sectors will converge to debate the obstacles and potential of integrated water management. The conference will be attended by CIIMAR researchers Laura Guimarães, Marisa Almeida, Francisco Arenas, Vitor Vasconcelos and Marina Dolbeth, as well as the Vice-Rector of the University of Porto, Pedro Rodrigues. Renowned international researchers will also be present, namely Ángel Borja (from AZTI, Spain), Fabio Bulleri (from the University of Pisa, Italy) and Tim Jennerjahn (from ZMT, Germany).

This event is a unique opportunity for researchers and students to have direct contact with scientists and professionals who play a crucial role in this issue, in order to jointly explore innovative solutions and chart paths towards sustainable water management.
