CIIMAR’s Neptune Seminar with Matthew Faith as keynote speaker
Title: Modelling the ecosystem service losses from climate-driven changes to plankton
Plankton monitoring surveys inform indicators of Good Environmental Status (GES) for pelagic habitats in European biodiversity assessments. These indicators have revealed that pelagic habitats in the Northeast Atlantic are not in GES, likely driven by climate change and direct human pressures. By understanding the societal consequences of not meeting GES, policymakers are better guided when implementing management measures. To do this, it is first necessary to understand the ecosystem services which will likely be impacted by plankton ecological changes.
Matthew will demonstrate the potential of plankton as indicators of ecosystem services and hazards in the marine environment. I will then explore the impact of climate-driven phytoplankton changes on both fisheries and carbon export.
Name: Matthew Faith
Matt is a PhD student at the University of Plymouth, with a primary focus on the impact of climate change on marine social-ecological systems. He is co-funded by the UK’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), the Alan Turing institute and the University of Plymouth. Working with the UK Pelagic Habitats Expert Group, Matt’s PhD aims to inform ecosystem-based management of the Northeast Atlantic (through UK Marine Strategy and OSPAR).
