CIIMAR’s Neptune Seminar with Abdeali Jivaji | Online
I found giant virus remnants integrated in the genome of the freshwater protist Euglena gracilis. These belong to a rare group of viruses with a very broad host range. I am trying to understand what they are and what are they doing in the cell.
I am a PhD student in the lab of Dr. Frank Aylward. I work on finding and understanding giant viruses infecting a wide range of protists. We employ both microbiology and bioinformatic approaches to better understand and appreciate these bizarre beasts.
