CIIMAR’s Oceanus Seminar with Laia Navarro Martín | Boca da Baleia – CIIMAR
Historically, Endocrine Disruptors(EDCs) were known for affecting reproduction related signaling mechanisms, but recent studies have shown they also act through other hormonal systems. Understanding the MoA of EDCs is crucial for protecting human and environmental health through adequate risk assessment and regulation. Advancements in omics technologies(genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, lipidomics) have allowed for studying the effects of EDCs at different biological levels, leading to better understanding of their adverse effects. Epigenetics has revealed that EDCs exposures can induce lasting effects through alterations in DNA methylation, histone modifications, and non-coding RNA expression.
To enhance understanding of EDCs’ MoA, efforts should be placed in three main areas of research. identifying biomarkers of exposure, integrating multi-omics data for a more comprehensive understanding of EDCs’ effects and studying the long-term effects of EDCs´ exposure, including epigenetic changes. In summary, integrating innovative methodologies and multi-omics approaches is key to enhancing risk assessment and regulation of EDCs, improving human and environmental health
My past and present research focuses on areas such as Aquaculture, Ecotoxicology and Environmental Toxicology. The main objective of my research is to elucidate the molecular mechanisms involved in the modulation of the endocrine system by environmental factors, such as temperature or contaminants, in aquatic organisms. Currently my research group applies novel multi-omics approaches (epigenomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics and lipidomics) with the ultimate goal of having a better characterization of the modes of action of endocrine disruptors. In the long term I intend to develop new strategies for toxicological analysis with the ultimate goal of improving environmental and human health.
