Title: Antibiotic resistance in environment: tackle a ubiquitous concern

Antibiotic resistance represents a well-known threat to human health. Lately, there are growing concerns about antibiotic resistance’s role as an environmental contaminant. Indeed, antibiotic-resistant bacteria are detected in different environments like water, soil and even polluted environments. Monitoring and contrasting antibiotic resistance diffusion is nowadays an urgent challenge to avoid an uncontrolled spread. In this sense, bacterial characteristics and antibiotic resistance gene context are key aspects to be considered and often underestimated. A comprehensive approach consisting of microbiological, biology molecular and genomic approaches may result successful in this challenge. I will propose a journey on the antibiotic resistance world, focusing on the genomic analysis of a multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Name: Gianuario Fortunato (CIIMAR)

Gianuario Fortunato is an enthusiastic microbiologist interested in comprehending the genetic adaptation of microorganisms to different environmental conditions. Starting from conventional microbiology he got into genomic analysis guided by the will to understand the microbial world. He believes that “we can learn a lot about our world from ancient inhabitants, the bacteria”.
