Course description

Unlock the complexities of social-ecological systems (SES) in our hands-on workshop, designed to deepen your understanding of the dynamics shaping our world. This workshop is a unique opportunity to grasp the fundamentals of complex system behavior and gain practical tools for analyzing and assessing these systems.

By enrolling, you’ll learn how to evaluate the interplay of social and ecological factors, identifying the effects of multiple stressors—from climate change to emerging contaminants. With a focus on systems thinking, you’ll master key numerical tools and frameworks that allow for a comprehensive analysis of SES.

In the workshop, you will also learn the fundamentals of several system analysis software tools, including STELLA, Kumu, and Ecopath with Ecosim.

This workshop will not only enhance your theoretical knowledge but also equip you with actionable insights that can be directly applied to your work in sustainability science. Don’t miss out on the chance to expand your expertise and contribute to building more resilient and sustainable systems.

Specific aims of the course

1. Learn a systems approach to interpreting social-ecological processes and relationships related to the marine environment
2. Learn elementary modeling, simulation, and ecological systems analysis employing computer software.
3. Learn importance of feedback using casual loop diagrams including impact of climate scenarios.
4. Practice communication skills in working groups and class presentations.
