Hazardous and Noxious Substances Spill Incidents

Advanced Search

On this database it is collected information on the fate and weathering of hazardous and noxious substances (HNS) accidentally spilt at the sea around the world. It gathers and systematizes existing information to assist stakeholders involved in spill preparedness and response, and builds return of experience datasheets for the chemicals involved. It will facilitate the incorporation of lessons from past incidents on the decision process to improve preparedness.

Fate and weathering facts observed/reported

Lost some containers overboard and others on deck caught fire with the risk of both explosion and toxic pollution. Missing containers were eventually confirmed to contain non-hazardous substances. However the containers on fire on the deck were giving off toxic fumes, they contained organic lead, cyanide and pesticides. A fire-fighting crew was sent out to extinguish the fire and all operations were carried out in very careful conditions. The presence of toxic gases was monitored to ensure the safety of the fire-fighting crew.
