What is CIIMAR Watch?

CIIMAR Monitoring Program dedicated to collecting biological, chemical, and physical data from the coastal region of northern Portugal. CIIMAR Watch addresses marine habitat conservation and biodiversity restoration for sustainable resource management in the Anthropocene

Gathering data for advancing our understanding of marine environments

CIIMAR Watch aim to establish baselines, track dynamics, and contribute to research in a region marked by intricate processes that undergo continuous change. The program will provide scientists, local communities, and decisionmakers with continuous, long-term, free, and open access data.

Monitoring in diverse dimensions

CIIMAR Watch combine interdisciplinary monitoring capabilities in a coordinated effort among researchers with expertise in physical oceanography, climatology, environmental chemistry, remote sensing, environmental toxicology, microbial ecology, benthic and pelagic ecology, marine mammal ecology, and biodiversity. This holistic approach provides a comprehensive view of a region marked by intricate processes that undergo continuous change.

CIIMAR WATCH DELIVERS:
Characterize the biological, physical, and chemical baselines in the coastal northern region of Portugal.
CIIMAR WATCH DELIVERS:
Understand the causes of environmental variability on seasonal and interannual scales.
CIIMAR WATCH DELIVERS:
Provide multidisciplinary datasets that can be used to establish relationships between biological, chemical, and physical variables.
CIIMAR WATCH DELIVERS:
Support public policies at local, regional and (inter)national levels, particularly those related to managing, conserving and restoring marine/coastal resources and to spatial planning.
CIIMAR WATCH DELIVERS:
Provide suitable data to support the development of various socio-economical activities in the northern region of Portugal.

Unlocking Scientific Data in NW Portugal

CIIMAR Watch program includes two monitoring regions located in the municipalities of Viana do Castelo (Viana Watch) and Porto (Porto Watch), covering key coastal areas in NW Portugal including coastal, intertidal and subtidal habitats, and estuarine environments. The two monitoring locations comprehend stations with different sampling frequencies: Stations (low frequency sampling) and Super Stations (high frequency sampling and future real-time data capabilities).
