Joana Assunção is a PhD researcher at the Coastal Biodiversity Laboratory at CIIMAR. During her PhD she worked with microalgae and cyanobacteria, focusing particularly on optimising biomass production and extracting bioactive compounds from a biorefining and valorisation perspective. She worked for a period in the microalgae production industry. At the moment, her focus has shifted to macroalgae, and her research is based on optimising the extraction of bioactive compounds (pigments, phytosterols, polysaccharides, among others) for biomass valorisation and application; as well as supporting all kinds of trials related to the group’s algae biotechnology.
