MICROPLASTICS AFFECT MICROALGAE INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION

CIIMAR study reveals that when subjected to the presence of microplastics, the growth and production of microalgae is significantly compromised.

The work entitled “Microplastics reduce microalgal biomass by decreasing single-cell weight: The barrier towards implementation at scale” was developed under the leadership of researcher Nereida Cordeiro, from CIIMAR and the University of Madeira.

The main results of the study show that the presence of microplastics in water can significantly influence the biomass production of microalgae at the industrial level.

“The magnitude of the impact seems to vary according to the type of microalgae in question, but it is noteworthy that all species analyzed suffered a considerable loss in biomass production when subjected to the presence of microplastics” clarifies Nereida Cordeiro.
